As Phi Mu continues to evolve, so does the way we welcome new members into our sisterhood. Whether you’re helping a college-bound woman learn about sorority life, sharing your own Phi Mu experience or staying informed about our membership processes, this page serves as your resource.

Phi Mu: From Me to You

Phi Mu: From Me to You is an outreach effort that allows alumnae to share the Phi Mu experience with college-bound women. By submitting a name and email through the form in myPhiMu, a Potential New Member (PNM) will receive helpful information about Phi Mu and sorority recruitment on her campus before registration closes. The Phi Mu chapter will also receive a list of submitted names.

Phi Mu: From Me to You is not a reference or recommendation process. Instead, it is an opportunity to introduce more women to Phi Mu early in their sorority journey and encourage them to participate in recruitment.

The form is open May 1–July 31 for fall recruitment and November 1–January 1 for spring recruitment. These dates align with campus recruitment registration timelines, and submissions cannot be accepted after recruitment begins because the purpose of the program is to encourage women to register and participate in the recruitment process.

Alumnae are some of Phi Mu’s greatest storytellers. Help us introduce more women to Phi Mu by sharing your experience and encouraging them to learn more about sorority life today.

FAQs

Does Phi Mu use recommendation letters?

No. Beginning with the fall 2021 Primary Recruitment season, Phi Mu no longer utilizes alumna references or recommendation letters as part of the membership selection process. This change allows collegiate chapters to make their own membership decisions and ensures every Potential New Member has the same opportunity to receive an invitation for membership to Phi Mu.

How should I respond if someone asks me for a recommendation letter?

You can respond however you feel is most appropriate, but we encourage you to use the opportunity to share your positive Phi Mu experience and encourage her to participate in recruitment.

Why can’t Potential New Members submit resumes, photos, or additional information through Phi Mu: From Me to You?

Chapters already receive information from Potential New Members through their campus recruitment registration process, including resumes, photos and other materials. Phi Mu: From Me to You is designed to introduce women to Phi Mu, not duplicate information already provided through recruitment.

Is a Potential New Member guaranteed a bid through Phi Mu: From Me to You?

No. Submitting a name through Phi Mu: From Me to You does not guarantee an invitation for membership. Potential New Members were also not guaranteed a bid when recommendation letters were previously used.

How will chapters use the information submitted through Phi Mu: From Me to You?

Each chapter determines how they use the information provided. There is no expectation for chapters to take a specific action after receiving submitted names.

Will I receive confirmation that a Potential New Member’s name was received?

You will receive confirmation from the Fraternity when your submission is completed. Chapters are not expected to send thank-you notes or individual acknowledgments after receiving names.

What will a Potential New Member receive after her name is submitted?

Potential New Members will receive information from Phi Mu about the Fraternity and the sorority recruitment experience. Emails are sent in batches, so there may be a delay between submission and when she receives the information.

Background Information about Legacies and References

Beginning with the fall 2021 Primary Recruitment season, Phi Mu’s National Council unanimously voted to remove preferential treatment of legacies and discontinue alumna references/recommendation letters for Potential New Members.

These changes allow collegiate chapters to make membership decisions based on each individual Potential New Member’s alignment with Phi Mu’s values of love, honor and truth while reducing barriers to joining.

Phi Mu continues to evolve alongside the higher education landscape and strives to offer the opportunity of membership to women who represent our ideals and values.
